AoDR Deathies rules

As of January 2026

The Academy of Death Racers, mods of the Discord server, and the /r/oscarsdeathrace subreddit will organize and host the annual Deathies! Occurring since 2021, an official vote to see how the community ranks the films nominated for Oscars will be held, which can then be used to see how these results compare with the official Academy’s result.

General membership

General membership in the Academy of Death Racers is free, and open to all members of the subreddit and Discord server community. All members can vote in all categories, however, there is an expectation that members only vote in categories where they have seen all the nominated films (an option will be supplied on the voting form to skip voting on a particular category).

General members can remain anonymous, but will require a Google account to cast votes, and prevent multiple ballots from the same user. All members of the Academy of Death Racers will cast secret votes on their favourites for each award category, with the winner of each category being the film that receives the most votes in each category, for which a preferential ballot will be used (in line with the Oscars’ rules).

A live streamed Academy of Death Racers Awards ceremony will take place prior to the Oscars ceremony, which will reveal the winners, with involvement and interaction from the official branch and community members. This will be available for all members of the community to view online.

Branch membership

Members can join one of six official branches of the Academy of Death Racers. Membership in each branch is free of cost, and can be applied for (along with suitable supporting statements/links/images) by reacting to the pinned post in the join-a-branch channel in the Discord server.

Membership of each branch is visible and transparent through clear membership groups on Discord, and as such can only be managed through Discord, and being a member of the ODR server. As a result, membership of one of these branches cannot be wholly anonymous, as it must be linked to a Discord username.

The six branches

The Animal Lovers Branch 🦁

Members of this branch should be people with a fondness for Animals. The winner of this branch’s category will be the recipient of the Johnny Award for Best Animal Performance in a Feature Film!

The Creators Branch ⌨️

Members of this branch should have experience in some sort of content creation — this can be audio (i.e., podcasts), graphic design, video, writing or other creative fields. To qualify for this branch, members are requested to provide examples of their work or involvement in some creative endeavour. This can be professional or just for pleasure. The winner of this branch’s category will be the recipient of the Biggest Cow Award for Best Conversation Piece.

The Food and Drink Branch 🍕

Members of this branch can include anyone who would like to join. (But this branch is highly recommended for people who are into gastronomy.) The winner of this branch’s category will be the recipient of the Best Food or Drink Scene Award.

The Indie Branch ❔

Members of this branch are proud and unapologetic outsiders, renegades, and misfits. Members of this branch champion films which – perhaps like themselves – fall through the cracks and fail to get recognized at the Oscars. The winner of this branch’s category will be the recipient of the Too Indie for the Oscars Award.

The Kino Branch

Members of this branch appreciate cinema in all its incarnations. Though not every film is suited to sweep the Oscars, BAFTAs, or Indie Spirits, that’s not all that defines a true classic! The winner of this branch’s category will be the recipient of the Prestigious KINO Award.

The Queer Branch 🌈

Members of this branch are members of the LGBTQ+ community, and will create a category of LGBTQ+ themed films. The winner of this branch's category will be the recipient of the Queer Palme d'AoDR!

Additional categories and branches

The organisers may permit additional categories to be added to the Deathies for single or multiple years. If you have a suggestion for an additional category or branch, please get in touch with the Mods on the Discord.

Branch nominations

Each branch will create a shortlist of up to 5 nominees which will be voted upon by all members, the winner of which should be announced at the Deathies by a Branch member. Branches are expected to share their shortlists (which can be created by whatever democratic methods they would like) by the dates decreed by the AoDR Deathies organisers. Late release of shortlists may result in that branch's shortlist not forming part of the official AoDR Deathies Ballot.

In order to ensure that The Deathies doesn't become a cliquey and unobtainable goal for regular racers to vote for Branch categories, we ask that Branch nominations do not contain more than 2 films which do not feature in the official lists of nominees of the Oscars, BAFTAs, or Film Independent Spirits.

Changes and announcements

The information above is subject to change at the discretion of the organisers. Any changes will be announced explicitly either here or in the academy-general channel on the Discord.
